21.10.2010 | Communology develops smart app for Java mobile phones

High-end applications for mobile phones even in the lower and medium price bracket

Cologne, Germany, October 21, 2010: Communology, a German software developer, has implemented a mobile application (app) for Deutsche Telekom. It makes Telekom’s popular service MyCommunity available on the Nokia S40 series, that is for mobile phones in the lower and medium price bracket. With this development, Communology has proven that it does not take a smartphone to run high-end apps. The MyCommunity app, which will initially be installed on the new model Nokia X2, enables users to quickly and easily contact family, friends and acquaintances via an intuitive animated photo gallery. Simply using the key pad, users can open a menu displaying various communication channels (voice call, SMS, MMS, social networks). The company is already working on touch screen support. Contact data can be imported directly from Outlook or social networks. And the Activity Log function makes it possible to see a call and message history for each contact instead of having to search for individual items in separate lists.

“We squeezed everything humanly possible out of Java for this project. We were intrigued by the idea of creating a truly smart app for mobile phones in the medium price bracket,” says Frank Bell, CTO of Communology.

Smart apps without a smartphone
The app uses a number of mobile phone functions that require deep integration. It takes a lot of know-how and experience to realize such a high-end application in Java ME and on the S40 mobile phones which have less functionality than smartphones. Communology developed and designed the basic client application for the platform Nokia S40 and also adjusted it for various end user models. On top of developing the app itself, Communology also played a major part in optimizing the basic mobile software to make it possible to use individual functions with these types of mobile phones in the first place.
